Sewing a Story

You've come up with an idea...

and you've chosen your characters...

and you have a space to create...

So....

Plug in that machine...

and lay out your plot...

Remember you'll need plenty of these to keep everything straight...
(and yes, you might get a few pin pricks...)

But soon you'll have a beginning...

And a bit of a middle...

And a bit of an end...

Sure, there will be hiccups along the way...

And you might discover you've made three of these...

But sooner or later, you'll have a finished project.

Of course, mine looks like they did in 1935!

  1. Great analogy. And those 1935 dresses are gorgeous.

  2. Elspeth - Designing a story really is a lot like designing an outfit, isn't it? And just like each designer and each outfit are a little different, I think each story is, too. Oh, and that finished dress you showed us? Lovely!

  3. I like this analogy better than my 'jigsaw puzzle' approach to writing. The finished product is more useful.

  4. Carol; They are stylish, aren't they? I'm glad you liked the post.

Margot; That's the wonderful thing - we might have the same pattern, but everyone's finished project will be unique. Aren't those 1935 fashions breathtaking?

Terry; This is what works for me - I like knowing where I'm heading.

  9. Oh Elspeth - I've been trying to comment for two days! I think I fixed it by getting rid of all my cookies and temp. files.
My comment - ah, now I know why I'm struggling - I never use patterns. yikes.

  10. That reminds me of the days when I actually sewed some outfits and how many times I had to rip out zippers and try again. A lot like writing for sure.
