Growing Your Plot

Once upon a time...

You discovered you had this...

and you were brave enough to face that blank sheet of paper

and do this...

and after a long time your first draft looked rather like this...

Now, you still needed to do plenty of this...

and spend a great deal of time doing this...

and hope for enough days like this...

But if you do the work...

You will eventually see this...

Even though it's back-breaking, (and boring) keep up with your this...

and be ruthless with this..

Remember you don't have to do it alone...

and someday...

you'll see this...

or maybe this...

or...who knows?

Your this...

just might have grown into this...

  1. Elspeth - Wonderful analogy!! All the stages of growing plants are really similar to creating a story. And what's really exciting is there are all sorts of stories to tell, just as a gardener/farmer can plant any number of things...

  2. I think it's important to recognize that writing is WORK and a manuscript doesn't spring up overnight like Jack's beanstalk. It needs nurturing.

  3. Margot; I'm glad you like it Here's to happy growing!

Terry; I never meant the last picture to be taken like that. My intention was to give the idea that you might have written something magical - not that it sprang up over night.

    Carol; Thanks!

  4. Elspeth - that possible interpretation of my comment occurred to me after I hit 'submit' (of course). I didn't mean to imply that you were suggesting it would happen overnight, only that it's a slow process (as indicated by the rest of your pictures.) Sorry for the misleading comment.

  7. Love the story. You said in pictures and a few words what I once blogged about paralleling writing with gardening. Your way is prettier.

  8. Maryann; It is a good metaphor for writing, isn't it? Thanks for your kind words.
